The title Spark came from Associate Producer Julie who said, “The George Floyd protests are sparking not just fires but a nationwide moral awakening.” During Spark’s production, more and more collaborators came on board with the goal of shedding light on systemic racism in America. His son Trent, a lifetime racial justice advocate, played an important role in Spark’s creation as well. I sat down with Daniel to learn how this all came. Already available in the App Store and Google Play, the game was developed by Daniel Shepherd, a Walmart associate. While Tom and Mary had no experience, Tom had observed his son, Chris, produce short films. Spark City, a simulation-style video game that puts players in charge of a Walmart dry grocery department, will help associates going through Academy training hone their skills. Soon, like-minded, “quaranteaming” neighbors joined them to make their first documentary. The deeper they went, the more inspired they became. There was also a VIP option that could be obtained with payment that allowed players to access additional VIP features. It included features such as games, places to visit and the ability to make friends. One thing led to another and news clips and historical context were added.
